John Smit is a former Springbok hooker and captain, born on 3 April 1978 in Pietermaritzburg. He played 111 Tests for South Africa between 2000 and 2011, captaining the team in 83 of those matches — a world record at the time. He led the Springboks to the 2007 Rugby World Cup title in Paris, beating England 15-6 in the final.
