Francois Pienaar is a former Springbok flanker and captain, born on 2 January 1967 in Vereeniging. He captained South Africa in all 29 of his Test matches and led the Springboks to the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home soil. His friendship with President Nelson Mandela during that tournament became one of the most powerful images in sporting history.
