The Springboks have won the Rugby Championship (formerly Tri Nations) five times: 2009, 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022. South Africa joined this annual tournament in 1996 when it began as the Tri Nations with New Zealand and Australia, expanding to four teams when Argentina joined in 2012. The Springboks rank among the competition's most successful teams alongside New Zealand.
