South Africa returned to international rugby on 15 August 1992, playing their first Test match after the apartheid-era isolation period against New Zealand at Ellis Park, Johannesburg. The Springboks had been excluded from international rugby since 1981 due to apartheid, missing both the 1987 and 1991 Rugby World Cups. Their return paved the way for the historic 1995 World Cup triumph on home soil.
