Chester Williams, known as ‘The Black Pearl of Paarl,’ played 27 Tests for South Africa between 1993 and 2000, scoring 14 tries including four in one quarter-final against Western Samoa at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. As one of very few Black players in that 1995 squad, he became an icon of Nelson Mandela’s Rainbow Nation vision and one of the tournament’s most recognisable faces. Williams passed away on 6 September 2019, aged 49, just weeks before South Africa won their third World Cup.
