The two nations first met in 1921 and the rivalry is widely regarded as the greatest in rugby history. South Africa closed the gap significantly in the modern era, winning back-to-back Rugby World Cups in 2019 and 2023, including a narrow 12–11 victory over New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup final in Paris.
