Danie Gerber was a South African centre who earned 24 Springbok caps between 1980 and 1992, scoring 19 Test tries, but South Africa’s international isolation meant he never played in a Rugby World Cup. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfield backs in history, with legends including Australian great Mark Ella naming him the finest centre they ever faced. Gerber’s career is the most celebrated casualty of rugby’s isolation era.
