John Smit was the captain who led the Springboks to the 2007 Rugby World Cup title, guiding South Africa to a 15-6 victory over England in Paris to claim the Webb Ellis Cup. He earned 111 Test caps as hooker and tighthead prop between 2000 and 2011, and his calm, intelligent leadership under pressure became the defining quality of that World Cup-winning side. Smit remains South Africa’s most celebrated captain alongside Siya Kolisi.
